Here it is! The paintings I've been working on for the past several months! This series is titled: WOULDN'T IT BE BEAUTIFUL? They were shown in my BFA Exit Show: "Liminal" at the Lamar Dodd School of Art this past April. It's been surreal having a group of my works up on a wall. Very vulnerable, ambivalent, and kinda selfish paintings (might I say), but I think we need more authenticity about the experience of living. These paintings are a sort of elaboration on questions like, "Wouldn't it be beautiful if...(insert scenario)?" I reflect on any feelings, thoughts, and sensations that arise as I work so the explicit meanings of the works are fluid. Maybe I'll elaborate on some of the different meanings on my website, oswinsonart.com, so check it out sometime for updates. Anyway, here are the list of works as seen above: "better off dead (Back to Bedlam), 2024, 36" x 36", acrylic and charcoal "in my basement", 2022-24, 36" x 48" and 24" x 48", acrylic, oil, and charcoal on two canvases "Babyboy", 2024, 26" x 37", acrylic and ink on canvas "KNOCKED UP", 2024, 36" x 60" and 36" x 66", acrylic, graphite, ink, fabric on two canvases "better off dead (Happy Ending)", 2024, acrylic and fabric on canvas #emergingart #abstractexpressionism #paintingoncanvas #artforthesoul #comicart #abstractpaintingsforsale #abstractpainting #figurativeart

"Plenty of Fish in the Sea (JACKPOT!)", 2023, 48" x 52", acrylic, oil, charcoal, and ink on canvas. This is my final project that I did for my figure painting class. It was my first time combining my acrylic, abstracted grounds with figures done in oil, and I'm pleased with the outcome. I was thinking about love and the idea of "when you know, you know". To be so in tune with yourself that you know when to give up on another and when to dig your feet in a relationship. The color pallet was inspired by Sonic Adventure's Casinopolis stage (if you know, you know)-- more specifically the Sonic pinball mini-game. I felt like the slots in the mini-game and the "game" aspect of it all made the painting more playful. #abstractpainting #popart #sonicadventure #geometricabstractions #abstractart #acrylicpainter #figurativeart

"Severini Overlook", watercolor and acrylic ink on paper, 4" x 6", 2023 I miss this view. Over the Summer on my study abroad trip to Italy, I started taking my coffee over to the studio building to sit on top of the wall and overlook the valley. The wind would be a little cooler; the sun not yet blazing; the birds would chirp and soar around; and it would be quiet before classes would start for the day. It was so calming. I haven't done any watercolor/ink paintings in a while-- don't really have any time between the bigger acrylic paintings I've been doing and work. I haven't been to the studio, so I was craving to get some painting done. I decided with the postcard size since I didn't have time for anything too big (and watercolor takes years). I saw this sculpture of Cupid and Psyche in the Vatican and it made me feel a way. The painting also makes reference to a few other experiences I had. It's interesting seeing where I stand at the beginning and the end of a work (particularly with the works that have been lurking in my studio for a bit). In a way, I started thinking about everyone and everything-- getting your hopes up in something and being let down. It's like "can't get no satisfaction" (previous work) but more specified. I always make work about a feeling that's weighing heavy on me-- I make work about my life. I think about my life while I work, and so, a lot of different experiences and feelings get thrown in there, but that's something I enjoy about my work. It's nuanced and complex. It's not just disappointed but foolish and excited. It's heated yet unsettling. It's conflicted within itself, and--to me--it feels real. #abstract #abstractart #abstractartist #acrylicpainting #popart

"paintin' (SHHH! AND THEY ALL QUIET DOWN NOW.)", 2'6" x 2'6", acrylic, charcoal, and paper on canvas. This one took a while. I started her before my trip and had a completely different idea to use excerpts from my journal and work with only brushstrokes. I came back, and well, my vibes completely shifted so the previous idea wasn't going to cut it. I started splatter painting. I laid the canvas down and started throwing paint at it-- I must admit I felt powerful while painting expressionistically. I thought about Pollock (one of a few artists I've had an affinity towards) and realized how much work action painting was. It took a while to build up the few layers I did, and it was all intentional-- you can control the brushes and water/paint ratio and the speed in which your moving. I then started thinking about this book I got when I was a kid. At the time, "Olivia" wasn't a super common name and my parents got me things just cause it had my name. So they bought me a book about "Olivia" the pig. Basically, she can do whatever she wants to do (she was just that capable). Her and her mom and little brother went to the MOMA and saw a Pollock, and "Olivia" thought, "damn, I can do that", so she went home and started painting the walls. So I thought it would be funny to put her in my painting. #abstractart #artist #abstractpainting #abstractexpressionism #acrylicpainting #popart #artcollector

And that is true-- but the same can be said about figuration and realism. I'm drawn to abstraction because it allows me to talk honestly about things like addiction and other troubling topics. I'm able to make work like this and it hold up in different ways depending on who's looking at it. The exclamation point was an interesting subject to use. What does it mean when its by itself? What if its repeated? Does the sporadic layout make it mean something else? And how does it interact with these intense colors?-- these were just a few things I was considering while I was making this painting. #abstractart #abstractartist #abstractpainting #popart #acrylicpainting #artcollector
